Stage one: Wesham to Tilston…’Tilston The Night Away’

And if you’re just joining us after the break (it’s been 12 months since the last effort), welcome to the 2025 Tour de England! Brought to you in association with our good friends at Soreen, Sainsbury’s, any decent local IPA, Co-op Meal Deals, factor 30 sunblock, bananas, Centrum +50 supplement, sparkling water preferably and probably a ton of other nonsense that I can’t remember!

If you’ve found this page then you already know the score: we wanna help Cure Leukaemia and honour the memory of Geoff Hill. If you knew him, you’d probably be doing something to help- that’s what the old scrote meant to a ton of people…and still does.

Right, here’s the tale of today’s stage…it was always gonna be a gentle lead-in because I was in work/attendance early-doors and hence couldn’t guarantee when I could get on the road, which meant assuming that 75 or 80 pan-flat miles oughta be doable. And that brought Tilston bang into range!

Here we go again…

The forecast was for showery bs, and regrettably the Met Office were bang on it. I could only hear the words of The Boss when he played at The Etihad for the second wet time back in 2016: “Good evening Manchester! Raining huh? Wouldn’t have it any other way!”. This may well be a recurring theme for the next few days. D’oh!

Cue first wardrobe change!

Digging the segregation…bumpy AF surface not so much!

Hurrah- just got the midday ferry. You are already singing the chorus, right?

Luck was with me, even if Liverpool’s traffic lights weren’t (stop-start much?) and I snuck on to the midday ferry. Arriving in Birkenhead left only 35 miles or so but it was on busy roads (Friday lunchtime into afternoon equals folk in a hurry) so there’s a dearth of photos. You lucky people, hah-hah!

That said, you ain’t escaping Scott Free! Here’s the rest…

Oh yeah? Kent wants a straightener!

Lock, stock etc…

They got the needle alright.

So today is a gentle ‘starter for ten’…a transition stage, and all that. Tomorrow is gonna bite, but at the time of scribbling this rubbish, I’m feeling pretty fine after insanely decent grub and ale. So there!

Tonight’s acco. Might have peaked too soon. #standard

The village. I am a number!

Pristine before I got inside.

Posted in the interests of social history or some old rubbish like that.

Looks fussy but was mentally delicious. #nogreggwallacehere

So that’s a wrap on stage uno: thanks for reading, both of you! Hopefully more of the same tomorrow, if perhaps a tad more photogenic. Speaking of which…

Brew Of The Day ahoy!

So here’s the thing: right now the total is about £7700, which is fairly tremendous…but what would really be wonderful would be to reach ten grand by September 16th, which is both the planned date that I arrive back in Lancashire but also Geoff’s anniversary. Sounds way out of reach, right? Let’s see: please share the JG link with any possible donor and explain why…you never know if you don’t buy a ticket etc.!

Tradition has had a word and is asking, no insisting that the two remaining items of business are the stats and the tune…and I ain’t gonna argue. Good night!

No trees were harmed today.

Today’s choice was in my noggin for a welcome 35 miles or so, and it ain’t even Sam’s greatest number!

And here is Sam’s greatest number…maybe!

And if you wanna nudge that total in the right direction, good on you!

ps a ton of thanks for the back-and-forth on yer socials…it keeps you going!
